History - Steeped in local history Brockley Cottage is referred to by Nikolaus Pevsner in his book "The Buildings of England" in which he says "The charm of the house is in the early Victorian contribution: fanciful barge boarded gables of different sizes and happily accidental positions". He continues "there is a persistent rumour that one of the outbuildings was originally an elephant house erected by The East India Company for an elephant that they had brought over." This refers to an elephant brought to this country in the early 18th century by a local land owner and Member of Parliament, John Pigott to haul timber from the nearby woods. The building referred to as an elephant house has now been converted into a separate cottage but the stone lined elephant bath remains within the grounds.
